The distinction of having an “innie” or “outie” belly button is something we often notice about ourselves or our children soon after they are born. A majority of people around the world have an innie belly button, but outies are incredibly common as well. The cause for concern about an outie belly button is when that outward bulge is actually a medical condition known as an umbilical hernia.
A hernia occurs when an internal organ or other part of the body extends through the wall of muscle or tissue that normally holds it. It is most common in the abdominal cavity between the hips and chest. Hernias are not usually life threatening, but can require surgery to prevent dangerous complications.
There are many reasons as to why an individual can develop a hernia. Typically, hernia patients are of an older age, but certain types of hernias are actually more common in infants, such as an umbilical hernia.
